Mona Al Murr is a self-taught Lebanese artist. She paints in acrylic on canvas from her studio in Harissa, Keserwan, and her work moves between abstraction and impression.
Painting came to her around 2020, after years of handmade crafts and clothing. She taught herself through experiment and study until a language of her own emerged: colour chosen for the feeling of each work, and surfaces that range from minimal to heavily textured, built with brush, palette knife and pouring.
Her subjects are memory, motherhood, relationships, stillness and change. Figures, fragments of faces, the sea and the landscape appear in the paintings without becoming their subject.
In her words
I don’t only paint what I see. I paint what I feel lies beneath it. Every painting carries a story for me, but I don’t want that story to limit the person looking at it. I want someone to stand in front of the work and find their own feeling in it.
